Memorial Day Weekend recognizes and celebrates the sacrifices that service members have made for our country. Traditionally, it’s spent with friends and family and it’s used as an opportunity to come together. Things are a little different this year but nonetheless there are plenty of fun-filled activities for you and your loved ones to do this Memorial Day weekend!
(1) South Padre Island
South Padre Island is a true Texan favorite with its warm breeze, beautiful beaches, and calm water. It’s a great place to take the family for a fun day trip or even for the whole weekend! South Padre Island officials have been preparing for weeks to make sure that their hotels, restaurant, and public facilities are sanitized and ready to go for all those families looking to spend their Memorial Day weekend at the beach. Plus, they’ve decided to go ahead and continue their cherished tradition of launching fireworks on Memorial Day to both commemorate our fallen soldiers and to welcome a new season. Officials just ask that beach goers adhere to general physical distancing guidelines and keep social gatherings under 6 people. All in all, South Padre Island is a great place to spend time with friends and family this Memorial Day Weekend!
(2) River Tubing
Just in time for Memorial Day weekend river parks and tubing have reopened all along the Comal and Guadalupe River! Is there a better way to spend the afternoon than lazily floating down the cool river with your friends and family while sippin on a cold drink? These parks and companies have been working diligently to make sure that they are providing a sanitized environment so that all families can feel safe and simply enjoy their day by the river. Not all tubing companies are open but the following have confirmed that they are or will be open by Memorial Day weekend: Corner Tubes, Comal Tubes, Texas State Tubes (reservations only), & Rockin R River Rides. Along the Comal River: Prince Solm Park, Hinman Island, and City Tube Chute have opened. Along the Guadalupe River: Cypress Bend Park and River Acres Park are open. So get your tubes, fill your icebox with drinks, and load up the family for a fun Memorial Day weekend on the river!
(3) State Parks
Texas State Parks are officially open! Across the great state of Texas, we are blessed to have incredible nature and geography which have been conserved through the State Park system. This Memorial Day weekend all State Parks are open for hikers, bikers, walkers, runners, and wanderers! Indeed, Memorial Day is the perfect occasion to enjoy being outdoors in our beautiful country and give thanks to the service members who have fallen while keeping us safe. To ensure the wellbeing of all visitors state park officials are limiting the amount of visitors per day so your best bet is to go on their website and make reservations in advance. Whether you love canyons or mountains, rivers or lakes, easy hikes or intense traversing, there’s a Texas State Park for you this Memorial Day weekend!
(4) Backyard BBQ
Is there anything more mouthwatering than the phrase “Texas BBQ”? Hard to imagine with the reputation that our state has garnered with our world class BBQ! Memorial Day weekend, above all, is about being with loved ones and celebrating the freedom that we are afforded as a nation thanks to our service members. What better way to spend quality time together than a good old fashioned back yard BBQ! If you’re looking for a good recipe, you’re in luck! There are plenty of excellent Texas BBQ recipes such “5 Texas-Approved BBQ Recipes” written by Beef Loving Texans and “Texas Style BBQ” written by Food & Wine. BBQ’s are super diverse and dynamic events that you can fill with fun activities like a dip in the pool, backyard games, a water-balloon fight, or just sitting around and enjoying the day.
If you like being outdoors, eating food with loved ones, and you’re looking for an excuse to get out of the house then a picnic just might be the Memorial Day weekend activity for you! Packing up some of your favorite food and drinks, a speaker for music, a blanket to lay in the grass, and some camping chairs to chill out in is the perfect recipe for a calm, enjoyable evening outdoors. For a bit of extra fun you can bring some simple activities like a soccer ball or a Frisbee, both of which are sure to keep everyone entertained both before and after eating!
It really wouldn’t be a proper Texas Memorial Day activities list if we didn’t include fishing. Similar to state parks and rivers, Texas has hundreds of lakes spread across the state which are perfect for a day of fishing! Even if fishing isn’t really for the whole family, a lake is a great place for running around, jumping in to cool off, and having a picnic or a BBQ! Texas lakes are a sure way to keep the whole family entertained while you enjoy the calm (and excitement) of fishing.
Whether you’re watching the fireworks on South Padre Island, hiking a canyon, or enjoying a day at the lake, make sure that this Memorial Day weekend you cherish those around you and give thanks for the soldiers who have fallen while keeping our nation a free nation. Happy Memorial Day weekend to all!
